With God On Our Side
Bob Dylan Cover With New Timely Lyrics
By Alex Marchand
Given the current climate of moral and religious justification for war and
terror, I thought it apt to redo Bob Dylan's great satirical song, "With God On
Our Side." This cover is about
the content, not so much the form. I don't claim to be some great musician. My
purpose of covering this song is the content. The content is what is important
here.

Oh my name it aint nothin'
My age it means less
The country I come from
Is called the Midwest
I was taught and brought up there
The laws to abide
And that the land that I live in
Has God on its side.
Oh the history books tell it
A story so strong
From the revolution
Through the drops of the bomb
All the names of the heroes
I was made to memorize
With guns in their hands
And God on their side.
Oh the War in the Gulf it
Came to an end
We rescued Kuwait
From an old friend
The sky filled with blackness
As the oil burned wide
Cause you're either against us
Or God's on their side.
Oh the Next Gulf War was
The Executives Pet
The reason for fighting it
I still don’t quite get
We can not end it
Until we suck up our pride
But you don't count the dead
When God's on your side.
And now we got wars against
Privatized Clans
Our foreign policies
Bring us into their lands
They’ll die for their Allah
In the shadows they’ll hide
And its all perfect logic
When your God’s on a side.
Oh I can’t help but wonder
Why we can’t live and let live
Jesus Christ always
Taught to forgive
Now I can't think for you
You'll have to decide
Whether two wrongs make right
And God
on your side.
So now that I'm leavin'
I'm weary as Hell
The confusion I'm feelin'
Ain't no tongue can tell
The words fill my head
And fall to the floor
If God's on our side
He'll stop the next war.
